Key Components of a VoIP Network

Endpoints
These are the devices used to make and receive VoIP calls, including IP desk phones, computers, tablets, and mobile applications. They capture your voice and play back the audio received from the other party. -
Codecs
Codecs convert voice into digital data so it can be transmitted efficiently across the network. They compress the audio for transmission and then decompress it at the receiving end, while maintaining suitable voice quality. -
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
SIP is the signalling protocol used to establish, manage, and terminate VoIP calls. It handles functions such as registering a telephone or extension, initiating a call, making the phone ring, and disconnecting the call. -
Local Router and Network
Your router and local network (LAN) transport VoIP traffic between your phones and the internet. Correct router configuration, sufficient bandwidth, low latency, and appropriate Quality of Service (QoS) settings are important for reliable voice communication. -
Internet Connection
A stable internet connection is essential for VoIP. Speed alone is not the only consideration—latency, jitter, packet loss and network congestion can have a major impact on call quality. -
Cloud PBX
The Cloud PBX is the central system hosted by the VoIP provider. It manages extensions, call routing, voicemail, hunt groups, IVR/auto-attendants, call recording and other telephone features. It also connects your VoIP system to the public telephone network where required.
How the Components Work Together
IP Phone → Local Network → Router → Internet → Cloud PBX → Telephone Network / Another VoIP User
For a business VoIP system to perform correctly, every part of this chain needs to be properly configured and maintained. A problem with the phone, cabling, switch, Wi-Fi, router, internet connection or Cloud PBX can affect call quality.
For business environments, wired Ethernet connections are generally preferred for VoIP phones, with properly configured QoS and a reliable business-grade network.
