CHEAP WI-FI: IS IT REALLY WORTH IT? DON’T THROUGH YOUR MONEY AWAY.

Affordable internet is a good choice — provided you choose the right package, router and connection type.

Cheap Wi-Fi can work well for basic browsing, WhatsApp, social media and single-device streaming. However, lower-cost packages may struggle when multiple people are streaming, working remotely, gaming or downloading large files at the same time.

At Callryt, we believe that choosing the right internet package is more than simply finding the lowest price. You need a reliable connection, suitable speeds, the right equipment and a clear understanding of the provider’s Fair Usage Policy (FUP). Stay away from these cheap routers, they are there only to make the purchase look more affordable.

1. What to Expect from Different Price and Speed Tiers

Ultra-Budget Packages

Typical speeds: 5 Mbps–10 Mbps (Really basic 2 users)

These packages may be suitable for:

  • WhatsApp and social media.

  • General web browsing.

  • Email and basic online activities.

  • One device streaming standard-definition or, under suitable conditions, HD video.

The catch: A 10 Mbps connection has limited capacity when several people use it simultaneously. Multiple video streams, video calls and downloads can quickly affect everyone's experience.

Mid-Range Packages

Typical speeds: 20 Mbps–75 Mbps (good for household and up to 4 users)

Depending on the connection type and actual performance, these packages can be better suited to:

  • Small families with several connected devices.

  • Remote work and video conferencing.

  • HD and 4K streaming.

  • Online gaming and everyday downloads.

  • Multiple users accessing the internet simultaneously.

For many households, this speed range can offer a good balance between cost and performance. Actual value depends on coverage, network quality, package limits and the number of users.

2. The Hidden Problems with Cheap Wi-Fi, Fair Usage Policies (FUP)

Not all uncapped internet packages offer the same experience. Some providers apply a Fair Usage Policy that limits high-speed data usage or reduces speeds after a specified monthly threshold. For example, a package may provide full speed up to a certain data allowance before reducing the connection to a much lower speed, potentially as low as 2 Mbps.

Always check the FUP before signing up. A package advertised as “uncapped” does not mean that it is unlimited data without restrictions, it has a limit according to the package you purchase.

Fibre, LTE or Fixed Wireless: Which Is Better?

Fibre internet. Where available, fibre is generally a strong choice for households and businesses that need consistent speeds, low latency and reliable performance. However, the quality of the package and service provider still matters.

LTE and fixed wireless

These services can be excellent alternatives where fibre is unavailable. However, performance depends on signal strength, coverage, tower capacity, network congestion and the quality of the installation.

Evening congestion can affect speeds when many users share the same cellular network.

Not All Uncapped LTE Packages Are Equal

Before choosing an LTE package, check:

  • The monthly price and included benefits. (This is where your FUP is determined)

  • The FUP threshold and what happens when it is reached.

  • The advertised speed and any speed restrictions.

  • Network coverage and expected signal quality.

  • Whether an external antenna or professional installation is required.

  • When your FUP is reached it will become very slow then later switch off the data.

Choosing the wrong package can leave you paying for a connection that does not meet your needs.

3. Your LTE Router Matters

A good internet package can still deliver disappointing results if the router is unsuitable for your location or network. At Callryt, our experience with LTE equipment has shown us the importance of selecting the right router for the job.

Our preferred affordable option: Huawei H155 5G CPE.

The Huawei H155 is a 5G-capable home/business router that also supports 4G LTE, making it a versatile option for compatible networks. Its performance will depend on network compatibility, signal quality, coverage and correct placement.

Based on Callryt's own testing experience, we prefer the Huawei H155 over the ZTE router products as per our field experience. We recommend selecting equipment based on real-world performance rather than price alone.
